Bozo Fish on Stand - Red
This original hand-carved wooden fish puppet from Mali and the Ivory Coast is a unique piece of folk art, each featuring distinctive carvings and vibrant colors, displayed on an iron stand. Traditionally worn on the head as a mask or puppet, these fish were used in harvest ceremonies to share moral lessons and cultural stories.
The Bozo people of Mali, renowned for their fishing and boating expertise, play a significant role in the country's fishing industry. Their name, "Bozo," originates from the Bambara word for "straw house," referring to their temporary fishing camps. These fish-shaped puppet masks are hand-carved by the Bozo, a West African fishing tribe, as a spiritual tribute to Faro, the water spirit in their tradition.
Each decorative fish is meticulously sculpted from wood, then hollowed out to function as a mask or puppet for festivals and processions. Hand-painted in bright colors, these striking pieces are displayed on a custom metal stand.
Please note that many of our handmade items are one of a kind, vintage and have indigenous decorative repair work which we believe adds to the intrinsic value and beauty of the items.
